Bio
Shoot a glance over at your neighbor's window and you may just find a reflection of precocious guy-next-door Jonathan Denmark. He’ll loosen his collar, then launch into it—merging unabashed rhetoric with syncopated beats, fashioning an introspective, alternative rap that falls somewhere between early Beck and Glassjaw…with hints of George Orwell at the seams.
Denmark’s trick is melting heartfelt acoustic creations with tense breakbeats. Expounded through witty lyrics and abridged portrayals of scathing self-deprecation, his soundscapes realize the anecdotes of an artist examining the perils of past relationships.
A Canadian native from a one-stoplight town, Denmark ventured to Los Angeles in 2003, where he entered the music scene with cautious intent, writing and performing for the kind of exclusive audiences best confined within his apartment walls.
He’s piqued the interest of notoriously hard-to-please Angelinos in just a few short months, drawing earnest crowds to hip Silverlake venues and prompting regular rotation on LA's KXLU radio.
Having been described as “a southern tent revival without religion," Denmark is pushing the boundaries of experimental instrumentation in LA’s flush underground scene with his deliberately raw and edgy, lyrically driven avant-hop sound.
To promote and celebrate the release of his debut EP, Books, Denmark will kick off a coastal California tour in 2009, bringing his abstract hip-hop to a wider audience.
Denmark is also preparing material for his second EP with Producer Mark Grilliot, with an expected 2009 release date.
